Well, the Angels signed Torii Hunter. Here's the thing: I really like Torii Hunter, but giving 5 years and $90 million to a guy who should be leaving his hitting prime, and is starting to get hurt every year because of the crazy defense he plays, might not be a good idea. So, this should be a good day right? We all should be able to make fun of a silly Angels contract, regardless of the fact that we like Hunter.
However, as soon as I want to start planting some seeds of shit talk (that is a plant, right?), I think of last off season. Who remembers being in the midst of some excellent Gary General HGH Matthews Jr. discussions when the Dodgers countered by signing Juan Pierre? 33 walks and 7,000 ground outs to the infield later, I am dreaming of having Matthews playing center in Chavez Ravine. So, all that being said, I am now well prepared for "Dodgers sign Rowand to 17 year deal" and "Kemp, Loney, and Laroche traded for Rolen" to hit the papers any day now. And Bill Plaschke is going to love every minute of it.

Hunter is also 32 years old and since nobody was offering more than $75 mil over 5 years the Angels definitely overpaid here.
Even though Rowand would be an upgrade from Pierre (Hell who wouldn't?), I really hope we don't go nuts to bring him in. I hate the idea that GM's have to make a move so they look like they are trying to win. That is the same stupid logic that put us in the mess with Pierre in the first place. Unless a guy is going to improve your team you shouldn't sign him just for the sake of perception. Rowand is a pretty average player coming off a career year and I would hate to see us pay him in the $15 mil range over an extended period.
As mentioned earlier, I would love to see us get Jones for his bat and awesome defense but Rowand just ain't worth it. If we can pick him up or make a Miggy deal that doesn't include guys named Loney, Kemp, or Billingsley I would be thrilled. At the same time, we don't need to throw money down the shitter to pick up a guy like Rowand (only a year removed from a similar mistake w/ Pierre).
Oh yeah, and fuck Bill Plaschke!
Fuck it. Sign Andruw Jones to the exact same contract that Torii Hunter just got.
Ned will look like a genius when AJ bounces back to produce a .275/40/120 line while playing amazing CF.
An outfield of Ethier/Jones/Kemp would look pretty good. And it would cost a total of $20MM/year over the next 3 years.
Not bad.
