You Ain't Gotta Go Home But You Gotta Get The FUCK OUT!

Peace out Juan Pierre! It's been real you dickless piece of shit!

Dodgers just signed Andruw Jones, 2 years $36 million (although oddly structured w/ $12 million of it coming up front as a signing bonus). This is fucking sweet! If Jones is even as shitty as last year (hit like crap, great D, still w/ 25 bombs and 95 RBI) I like this deal when looking at the market. There is ZERO long term risk and the guy is making the same as Torri Hunter (despite having much better career numbers). He is also only making a few million a year more than bums like JD Drew (thank God that douchebag opted out).

Now if only Coletti doesn't screw up the alignment I will be fucking amped. Tony Jackson of the Daily News seems to think this now frees up the Dodgers to trade Ethier or Kemp to get a front line starter. Ethier, yes of course. Kemp, NEVER! Getting Jones only helps if you keep Matt Kemp! You then have a fucking ridiculous outfield even if Bobby is playing over in left.

Let me spell it out for you Luigi:

Move #1: Send Fivel back to New Orleans to scoop the water out of his rat infested apartment and dance for nickles on Bourbon St.

Move #2: Don't even utter the name Matt Kemp in the company of people working for other organizations.

Move #3: Attempt to make a deal for another pitcher if you can find a reasonable match giving up guys like Laroche, Abreu, Young, Meloan, or perhaps even Kershaw (if it is a real front line guy). If not, see how the Kuroda thing works out. I would love another arm but frankly we don't need much else if Penny, Lowe, and Billingsley all pitch like they did last year and the bullpen stays sharp.

Move #4: Buy the fucking Dom because we are winning it all bitches!

Hi, spending $18 million a year on a career .263 hitter (who hit .222 last year) is not a great investment.

His defense is spectacular, but I guarantee he will be a hole in your lineup.

Don't ever come here and quote batting average like it is a meaningful stat again. Jones has driven in over 90 runs in each of the last 8 years. I will take that kind of hole in the lineup. Even in his worst year ever last season (when he played with a hyper extended elbow) he had a higher OPS than Pierre had in any of his last 3 years. He also has a fully functioning throwing arm (and plays Gold Glove D). Jones is an all-star caliber player who has been incredibly consistent throughout his career and we got him for fewer years at the same price as Torri Hunter? This deal is awesome!

How about his career 2:1 K:BB ratio? Is that Sabermetric enough for you?

I don't care how guys get out (when they do) either. Here's a stat I like...mashing the pelota. Andruw Jones is awesome at that. I know he's no Dave Roberts but hey, who is?

You should care how guys get out. A sacrifice fly or ground ball to the proper side of the infield can score a run or advance a runner, whereas a strikeout does nothing.

Regardless I still think Andruw is a fucking ridiculously talented player...I just think his offense is overrated.

I somehow agree with both of you...a rare occassion indeed.

First, it rarely matters how a player makes an out. Normally, a K is the same as a pop-up or ground out. Those rare occassions when it does matter are widely given too much weight. Usually if a guy is called a "situational hitter" it means he's not that good.

Second, our elation at the Jones signing must be viewed in consideration of who he's replacing in CF. Bobby said he'll be a "hole in your lineup." If Andrew Jones is a hole then he is a hole that it would take about 2 minutes to dig w/ a shovel. Pierre is the type of hole that bends space-time is such a drastic fashion that no light, or hope, or God, or the Bible, or OJ can escape. Think of the grass behind 2B as the event horizon.

Third, he's only signed for 2 years. Not a big risk w/ the possibility of high reward (i.e. maybe he'll have another .270/45/120 line w/ sick D)

Fourth, never quote RBI when telling someone they're using dumb/overrated stat

I agree his offense is somewhat overrated (although still pretty damn good), but to say he will be a hole in the lineup is ridiculous. Also considering the market he is a steal (his career numbers are much better than Hunter's and he is off the hinges defensively). My elation (good word) is as much about the deal itself (only having to be on the hook for two years while the Gayngels will be paying Hunter $18 million when he's 37) and the fact that it lets us peace out Frenchy the rat.

I also reserve the right to use any stats (no matter how meaningless) as long as they support my unreasoned opinion.

I am a little reluctant to start fitting myself for a championship ring yet (bloggers are included on the roster of people who get rings, right?), but Andruw Jones is pretty damn good.

Looking just at last year, Jones hit so terribly that his VORP put him at a solid 34th among major league center fielders. However, if you look at his win shares (WARP 1, 2 or 3) which include defense, he was back in the top 15 (and way ahead of Pierre). And, again, this was taking into account Andruw's worse season at the plate in a decade.

On the strikeout note, I agree that striking out a lot is not radical. However, Andruw's value as a hitter is in his power and if striking out a lot is what it takes, then so be it.

Apart from missing the season due to injury, there is no way that Jones won't be better than Pierre. Assuming, his hitting returns back to his career averages, Andruw will return to being one of the most valuable center fielders in baseball. Finally, and this has been touched on already, the contract is only 2 years so it's not like the Dodgers are looking at any long-term exposure here.

We better get some bling if the Dodgers win it all! I am pretty sure a World Series ring is not a bad conversation starter with the ladies either. If we had any female readers I suppose we could ask them but for now I'm just assuming we would pull some serious wool rocking a little championship jewelry at the club.

Don't get me wrong, I wish the Giants had signed Andruw. Seeing him make plays in the cavernous CF of Pac Bell Park would have been awesome.

You're right that Andruw is valuable for his power, but you have to believe that his power will be diminished at the shithole park that he is going to be forced to play in next year, therefore making his high strikeout rate and low batting average more apparent.

You're also right that he will be less of a hole in the lineup than Juan Pierre. But that reminds me of the old adage, "Even if you win the Special Olympics, you're still retarded."

In other words, he's not going to solve your offensive issues.

If by "shithole" you mean greatest place on earth outside of Suzy Shuster's bra, then you are correct about Dodgers Stadium. Folks really overestimate how hard it is to hit home runs there (a large part of the low numbers is that the Dodgers have historically never had a lot of power guys and recently have had a few donkeys in the lineup that bring the numbers down). The actual dimensions are pretty fair and the ball carries OK with the right weather (it just isn't a bandbox like some stadiums).

Also to the extent the Dodgers had "offensive issues" it was because of Pierre, Furcal's injured ankle, and the fact that Grady's dumbass took half the season to play Kemp and Loney (trading Betemit didn't help either). With Kemp and Loney starting from day one, Pierre replaced by an all-star, and Furcal healthy I really like the lineup Torre will be putting out there.
