Mr. Falcon's 2009 Plan (pt. 4 -- Shortstop)

We all remember the end of 2008 when resigning Rafael Furcal seemed like a done deal. Words like "priority" and "mutual interest" were thrown around. It seemed like he might ever get signed before the free agent window even opened. Cut to just a month later and things like "slipping out of the picture" and "reluctant to go to 3 years" are being said. Since his acquisition prior to the 2006 season Furcal has been the Dodgers best position player when healthy. In addition, he played the entire 2007 season on a bum ankle thanks to Repko taking baseball camp way too seriously. And yes...a nagging back situation kept him out of most of 2008. However, I don't really see Raffy as an injury prone player. From 2002 to 2006 he averaged 152 games plays a very physically demanding position. Late in 2008 he returned and showed no signs of the back injury that had kept him out. He's only 31 years old. Reports indicate that Ned won't even give Raffy a renewal of his 3/$39MM contract despite other teams likely willing to go 4 years (A's, Giants, Blue Jays, Royals, etc...). Let's get our shit together and sign this guy. He's a great leadoff guy (.352 career OBP) that's plays quality defense at a premium position. Also, his broke-ass english post-game interviews are priceless works of gold.

Chin Lung Hu ("CLH") can play defense. However, offensively he has been a partial-birth abortion. In 116 ABs last year Hu posted a sub-.500 OPS. Sadly, that's not much better than anyone on the TQ...ViG crew could do (lets not forgot that Mr. Falcon OPS'd over 1.200 in the PCBL in 2006). In his defense Hu has had vision issues that have effected his hitting (and no, that was not a poke at his ancestry). If he can get his vision cleared up who knows where he'll end up.

Ivan DeJesus isn't ready for the show yet. He has put up great numbers, but hasn't seen action above AA yet. He might be an option at 2B if DeWitt struggles in 2009.

There are also Jack Wilson rumors resurfacing. I feel as though Colletti loves nothing more than taking a hammer to my coin purse. To make it better, CLH and Delwyn Young are wanted in return. CLH is Jack Wilson...except he plays for fortune cookies (literally). Delwyn Young is Jack Wilson dads (yes he fucked Wilson's mom and yes he owns a time machine). On a side note, Jack Wilson fucked Erik Velie's sister. Imagine Velie wearing a wig. Now imagine fucking that. I can't be forced to endure that imagery with every 5-3 putout. Also, fuck Jack Wilson. He can't hit professional baseball pitches.

Here's what I thought about when Furcal to the A's seemed like a done deal. "A possible non-Furcal option for SS is Edgar Renteria. He didn't have a great year in Detroit last year. He only managed a .317 OBP, which is Pierre-esque. However, in 2006 and 2007 with Atlanta he posted .361 and .390 marks respectively. Those are quality numbers from shortstop. Rumor is Renteria can be had on a short term deal along the lines of 2/$16-18MM. I would be OK signing Renteria on short term deal to bridge the gap until DeJesus is ready." Subsequently, Renteria has signed with the Giants for 2/$18MM. Not bad for an idiot like Brian Sabean.

Recommendation: Sign Furcal for 3/$33 or 4/$40

Prediction: Sadly, a bullshit filler like Angel Berroa
