Brad Ausmus is 40 years old. He hasn't even been a league average hitter since 1999. And in that year he was exactly league average. He had only 11 extra base hits last year in 81 games. So he can't hit. Argument over.
But he's a great defensive catcher, right? He definitely used to be. However, his stats over the last three years indicate that he has fallen well below the league average.
But proven liar and douchebag, Roger Clemens, once said that he's the best catcher he ever had. Therefore, he must be great.
Well done Ned. All the pieces are falling in place.

Where the hell is Toby Hall when you need him!
This seems to be Ned's pattern. So long as he thinks the average fan has heard of the guy he fears no repercussions in signing these washed up bums. At some point I (or whoever else takes the initiative) will post a revised breakdown of the teams payroll situation now that most of the young arbitration eligible guys have been inked (none were signed to extensions as far as I know and Martin made the most at $3.9 mil. for the upcoming season).
