Lineup Looks Better

Here's how it looks to me...

1. Furcal
2. Martin
3. Loney
4. Jones
5. Kent
6. Kemp
7. Ethier
8. Laroche
9. Tiger Penis

I wouldn't be opposed to swapping Martin and Kemp, but either way works for me.

Nomar can takeover the primary pinch-hitter role for Olmedo, which is a huge upgrade. He could also split time w/ Laroche at 3B (70/30 Laroche???) and even get the occassional start at 1B against lefties. Loney does hit lefties well, but Nomar has raked them over the years. This set-up will keep Nomar sharp and off the DL, let the kids develop, and give us a great bat off the bench (allbeit a $9MM bat on the bench).

Also, I really hope we can spin Pierre for a starting pitcher. 2 guys that seem to have fallen out of favor recently are Padilla and Capuano. As I mentioned before, TEX might actually have some interest in Pierre. I'm not sure what interest MIL would have in Pierre, but Hall/Capuano for Rolen rumor was floating around. MIL currently has a converted SS playing CF and I don't think they have a leadoff hitter. Capuano was looking good until last season...so this might be a good buy low situation. Does anyone know what his contract looks like?

Capuano made $3.25 MM last year. Don't know how long he's locked up for but that ain't bad at all. Before last year he was a .500 guy with an ERA just over 4.00 (again not bad at all for a 4th or 5th starter). He ended up last year 5-12 (after a streak of losses in 12 straight decisions where it seems like he had some bad luck in addition to not pitching all that great) and a 5.10 ERA on the year. Also spent time on the DL and had offseason shoulder surger (although non-throwing shoulder).

All that being said I don't think we can make a deal that fits. I'd be willing to take on the Hall salary dump in exchange for the Pierre one (Hall sucks but he doesn't have full blown AIDS like Fivel). I just don't see what other part we could add (because clearly Rolen is worth a ton more than Pierre to any team with its sanity). I know they like Laroche but I think that throws the trade lopsided in their favor. I also don't know if they would take a guy like Abreu or another lesser prospect in the deal.

Capuano is locked up through 2009. He is arbitration eligible for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. And until last year, he looked like he was becoming a pretty good pitcher.

As for Brewers interest in Pierre, Hall was playing center for the Brewers to open up a spot for Ryan Braun and not because the Brewers couldn't find anyone to play centerfield. While Hall had a horrific year last year, he is still projected to be much better. His contract is also cheaper and shorter than the Pierre contract.

In sum, you basically said that you would trade Pierre for a younger, cheaper, better player. I would too, but the Brewers might not.

It's also not clear where we would play Hall, unless we just decided not to play Ethier.

Looking at the Brewers, I don't really see why they would have any interest in Fievel, but I'm not really sure why anyone has any interest in him.

Also, do you really see Torre not making Nomar a regular lineup guy? We all know that he'll play whenever he's not hurt and Laroche will be riding the pine.

Laroche would have to have a ridiculous spring. Even then, it's no lock.

Nomar is going to start, for sure. Talking Andy LaRoche at this point is insanity.

I'm not advocating acquiring Bill Hall. We've got nowhere to put him. I was just pointing out that the Brewers have had discussions about trading Capuano and I wanted to show the context of their discussions related to him. The MIL-STL rumor just happened to include Bill Hall. I think Purple Stuff ran with the Bill Hall thing in a zealous fervor spawned by the thought of dumping Pierre.

I was suggesting that we spin Pierre for a starting pitcher. Maybe Pierre/$$$/Lower Prospect could land Capuano.

Hall played SS last year, while Braun plays 3B. Also, Hall was playing CF from opening day last year, right? Braun didn't come up from AAA until well into the season. I thought these moves were unrelated...

Also, I don't think Nomar starting at 3B is a foregone conclusion. The organization has had recent discussions w/ him about accepting a utility role. However, that was probably spawned by the Miguel Cabrera possibility.

As I said, though, I would like to see Nomar get about 30% at third, 15% time at first, and substantial ABs as a pinch-hitter. Keep him healthy/sharp and he'll hit.

However, maybe we can trade Nomar to the Gay-ngels. They need a 3B and have expressed interest in him in 2005 and 2006. Don't know what we could get or would want from the Angels. I would take Scott Sheilds in a heartbeat. Some would say that would be highway robbery, but they both had bad years in 2007. Is that a ridiculous proposal??? Torre likes to use the pen a lot. Having a bullpen of Beimel/Proctor/Sheilds/Broxton/Saito to go along w/ a good starting rotation would be fucking sick.

Well Hall was just included in the StL./Mil. deal as a salary dump (presumably if Mil. was gonna take on Rolen's contract they would need to get some relief in the form of StL. taking Hall's smaller, but still oversized contract). I figured something like that would also be required in a Pierre deal (if not more so because Pierre has no value AND an oppressive contract). This problem is solved in Mr. Falcon's trade though just by sending cash (which I am all for in the case of Pierre because any penny the other team picks up saves us dough in the end). If they are really looking to dump Capuano I like this proposal. It may be tough to find the right prospect match but we can probably just adjust the amount of cash accordingly. If we can convince the Brewers Pierre is at least a serviceable starting CF it might be crazy enough to work.

There is no way Nomar should be our starting 3B. Unless we make another move, Laroche has to be given a legit shot to be the every day guy. I like Nomar starting roughly 2-3 days a week (mix of 3B and 1B to rest Loney) while being the go-to pinch hitter. Think this keeps him rested/healthy but sharp. Also gives Laroche a shot to prove what he can do (we can't give him another BS 90AB season and peace him out in a trade if he is supposedly as big a prospect as everybody seems to think, and his minor league numbers would indicate).

I am stupid. It was JJ Hardy that pushed Hall to centerfield, not Ryan Braun.

Derek Jeter > Entire Dodger lineup.

Are you bitches hung over or something?

Post already!

Pierre is a good fourth outfielder who should be kept because nobody would want him in a trade. He was second in the league in stolen bases and first in sac bunts. Though he's not God, he's still a useful player. SPEED HAS NO SLUMP!

Mr. Falcon said...

First, the best thing about Jeter is his signature cologne. I think it's called Clutch or True Yankee or Faggot Juice or something. Either way it smells like gay sex.

Second, any Juan Pierre apologists will not be tolerated on this site. Pierre is one of the worst players in the MLB. Also, $9MM/yr for a 4th outfielder is a travishamockery. Did u know the Nazis used to make the Jews wear Juan Pierre t-shirt jerseys?

Now I know what to get Phil for Christmas.

Derek Jeter's cologne that smells of gay sex > Entire Dodger lineup.

I don't know who this "Mr. Falcon" guy is, but he obviously has no appreciation for speed - I bet he's really fat and slow. Speed is still optimally important in the National League, so it never does well to trade a man who can swipe 50+ bags a year.

Purple Stuff said...

I will not accept Derek Jeter's "Homo Musk" as a holiday gift. It may smell great but I only wear Sex Panther, by Odion.

Speed is fantastic. If Juan Pierre ever got on base he would probably have some value to the Dodgers. The problem is his OBP is under .330 over the last 3 years and he slugs like an 8 year old girl. A few steals does not make up for the fact that Juan Pierre has AIDS at the plate.

Anyone who thinks Pierre isn't HORRIBLE at baseball has had their brain rotted because all the jizz they suck down is starting to seep into their dome.

Beasy Bee said...

I couldn't find shit on Baseball Prospectus for Derek Jeter's cologne, so I really have no frame of reference in this argument.

Well since we are apparently looking at Pierre in a vacuum, let's take a look at his second-half stats last season - a time when supposedly clutch players step-up. A .308 avg., .352 OBP., 30 SB, and he led the team in runs. If you account for his improvement in the second-half by figuring it took Pierre half-a-season to adjust to his new team and style of play, along with the weight of a new contract, it's completely understandable that he performed at a higher level in the second-half - a level at which we can predict he will perform for all of this year. That is simply too good a product to give away, and if he were treated as a fourth outfielder who saw action 3-4 times a week at all positions, as well as a late inning pinch runner, he would be far above average for those spots. But "Purple Stuff" you do not understand the importance of speed in the NL, so you are probably fat and slow also.

Purple Stuff said...

First off, I am not fat and slow. I am lean and lightning quick (just ask the ladies). Why the fuck would Pierre need to adjust to a new team? Or style of play? His style of play is abortion-like at all times. What the fuck does the team he plays for have to do with how he plays? Its not like he was put in the cleanup spot and told to mash jacks all day.

No one is underestimating Pierre's ability to steal bases. That is sweet. The problem is he is never on base to do it with his .330 OBP the last 3 years.

Mr. Falcon said...

Juan Pierre is a fast little French man that, although he's cute and makes a great stocking stuffer, is NOT good at playing professional baseball matches. Speed is a great asset, but it can only be used when a player gets on base. Pierre rarely does. In actuality, his speed should help him get on base...but it rarely does.

Pierre's Pros:
1. Steals bases
2. The bunt double (twice in '07)

Con:
1. Very low OBP
2. Abhorrent SLG
3. Ergo...genocidal OPS
4. Worst arm in baseball (not MLB...all levels of baseball)
5. Zero range in CF
6. Poor routes to ball
7. Child Molester
8. Nazi sympathizer
9. Large/Long Contract
10. Blocks other players

Pierre's ONE asset as a player does NOT justify a place in the squad. If he could be relegated to some late-inning pinch-runner role, then MAYBE.

Matt Kemp, Andruw Jones, and Andre Ethier are far superior players both offensively and defensively. Anytime Pierre is given a start he's keeping a better player off the field.

ANGUS..."it took Pierre half-a-season to adjust to his new team and style of play, along with the weight of a new contract..."

Have u been reading Bill Plashke articles again? If so, I have the number of a support group u should call. There's no way u can believe that, right? And...who care why he sucks?

Pierre's performance for the entirety of 2007 (which was terrible) mirrors his performance of 2006, 2005, and 2004. You can expect the same from him in 2008. There's NO reason to think he's suddenly going to play over his head.
