This post was originally going to be titled, "Manny is a Fag" after the mercurial outfielder rejected yet another Dodgers contract offer for way more money than anyone else is offering him. I was spurred on by McBankrupt's (largely accurate) claim, that the Dodgers were bidding against themselves and weren't going to continue to raise the pricetag for Manny in the absence of other legitimate suitors.
Then I read this article summing up the situation on the Doyer website. Turns out that while McCourt and Co. have told the media they've offered 2/$45, they really haven't. Much of the money is deferred (in year one, Manny would be paid $10 million with the remaining $15 million to be paid out over five years). This isn't the place for me to give a lecture on the time value of money but anyone who isn't retarded knows that getting $25 million over five years is a hell of a lot less money than getting $25 million this year. While Manny might not understand it himself, Scotty Boras (whatever else you may say about him) does not have down syndrome.
Boras told the Dodgers in an email (Coletti responded by basically saying that "emails don't count as communication") that Manny will accept a 2/$45 deal if that is what it really is (meaning he gets paid the money right away). Instead, McCourt has decided to play hardball while lying to the fans who aren't smart enough to read between the lines. Folks, there is a reason the Dodgers were so anxious to get Andruw Jones to defer all the money owed to him, because paying it out over time costs a lot less than paying it out up front. The team has now set a noon (coming up shortly) deadline to get a deal done. Let's hope our GM joins the 21st century and our owner stops jerking around the fans and our best player. I was all for playing hardball when that meant signing Adam Dunn. Ned fucked that up so now he has to eat his shit-sandwich and get this deal done. At the same time, Manny's side appears to be acting reasonably. My conclusion: the Dodger front office needs to stop lying to everyone and just pay Manny 2/$45 and let him start smashing the pelota.
And if you don't believe me, Dodger beat writer Tony Jackson has pretty much the exact same take on our cheapskate owner in his blog.
In other hot stove news, we signed Doug Mienteikekwviziisiehic to a minor league deal. So yeah, not much news at all.
On the field, Randy Wolf looked sharp yesterday while R-Mart doubled, homered, and knocked in three in a 16-7 destruction of our enemies from up north. Even when it doesn't count, beating the San Francisco Midgets always feels good.
Today, Billingsley and his broken leg take the hill against the Seattle Mariners. Hope they zamboni the pitcher's mound beforehand.
Fuck Frank McCourt!

2/$45MM will be the deal by the end of today. Done and Done.
McCourt needs to stop trying to pull BS. It's like he's trying NOT to sign Manny, but be able to cover his bases with a plausible deniability of "well...I tried"
That's basically what Tony Jackson said, too. I'm not enough of a math whiz to figure out what the real present value of a contract like that is but wouldn't be shocked if it is down below $20 million for year one (rather than $25). Don't think the fans would be as pissed at Manny for holding out if they learned the REAL numbers involved.
Oh by the way, over on Beasy Bee's other blog thelongsufferingfans.blogspot.com (Where the hell is he by the way?) the GAY-ngel fans are pimping Howie Kendrick. Please proceed to drop bombs in order to punish that kind of idiocy.
